Immigration Wave Effects on Canada’s Trade
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper utilizes an enhanced gravity model to estimate the effect of lagged immigration waves on Canadian imports and exports, by province. Empirically, this model was tested using Canadian data on import and export flows to the top 40 countries of origin for immigrants to Canada based upon the composition of the most recent wave of immigrants. The results are consistent with previous studies, where immigrants increased both import and export trade flows. By adding the provincial immigrant wave variable, it was also found that immigrants most strongly affect imports after 5-10 years, whereas for exports, the immigrant effect is strongest after 10-15 years. * Corresponding author. Canada’s immigration system is currently undergoing significant change driven by several goals that include: (1) a desire to improve the economic outcomes of entering immigrants, given the deterioration in labour market outcomes over the past several decades; (2) an attempt to better respond to short-term regional labour market shortages often associated with commodity booms, and (3) a desire t...

JUILLET-AOÛT 2010 28 To judge the successes of the immigration system from an economic perspective, say Don Drummond and Francis Fong of the TD Bank, we need to answer four basic questions: “What are the objectives of the system? Are the objectives being met? If not, why not? And finally, how can the system be improved to more closely align it to the objectives?” They argue that the legitimate ...

This paper examines the effect of immigration on the US trade flows. The model hypothesizes that immigration facilitates international trade with home countries by lowering transaction costs. Immigrants also demand products from their country of origin, and thus stimulate trade. Using a panel data set I estimate a dynamic, fixed-effect model. The immigrant stock, a proxy for transaction costs, ...
